General Description:
The Platypus is a unique and endemic Australian monotreme (egg-bearing/warm-blooded). It is known quite famously for its duck-like bill (which is actually soft and fleshy, and used in echo-location), its ability to lay eggs yet raise its young on a milk-like substance, its beaver-like tail (used for steering in the water) and its venomous hind-spurs which are located only on the males. The Platypus is located in Eastern and South-Eastern Australia, it is primarily a fresh-water aquatic creature which feeds on underwater grubs, worms, shellfish and carrion. The platypus is shy and usually solitary, and has only bred once in captivity despite sophisticated breeding techniques at zoos. It can softly call other platypi with a soft, puppy-like growl/croon. When mating, the two platypi swim in circles before copulating.
Lessons:
Please remember that if this animal is contacting you, it will often be the best resource for teaching you what its lessons are. What I write is only intended to be a guide, it is not absolute, nor is it infallible.
- Platypus comes into our life to teach us ancient lessons that are rooted in our subconscious, and fundamental to our psyche. They tend to be concerned with mysteries that we don't often think about and may force us through a spiritual murk in order to realise that sometimes we find the greatest wisdoms in the times where we feel like we have the least clarity and need to rely on other senses and talents. We might be preoccupied during this time on death, birth and mortality.
- Platypus is the prehistoric paradox. It was considered a hoax, and is an animal of paradoxical behaviours. When platypus comes into our life it's time to realise that on some level, we just don't fit in, and we should be proud of it. Take pride in your contradictions, take pride in where your place is in society.
- Platypus is an animal of great privacy and secrecy. There are still things about this creature that we don't understand today despite extensive study. If we're a socialite, platypus reminds us that we not only need time to recharge, but to learn lessons that we can focus on away from the influences of other people. Solitude is important, and it is crucial that we learn how to be at peace with isolation.
- Often our experiences wash over us and we don't pay attention to the details of how they've affected us, and how in turn we conduct ourselves through our lives. Platypus draws our attention to the grit of experience, and doesn't let us look away from details that might be unpleasant. It is in the process of looking into the details that hurt or feel uncomfortable, that we find the most nourishing truths about ourselves.
- Platypus is excellent when it comes to teaching us water wisdom and helping us to swim through our emotions. They're tough lessons, but life-changing, and indispensable in our spiritual journeys.
- People who are drawn to platypus, or who see platypus symbolism in their lives, are often quite good with computers and other electrical equipment. The ability of the platypi to use echo-location translates across and these people are often being asked to pursue their connection to impulse and electricity. It might be time to learn those programs you've been putting off, or to enrol in that course, or to hire an electrician to fix faulty wiring etc.
- The platypus is a curious energy, it leaves no stone unturned on its quest to find nourishment. It is the animal of investigation and curiosity. Running concurrent to the lesson on the grit of experience, it's time to follow every thread of our experiences that seem relevant or irrelevant. It will take time, it will take patience, it will take strength, and platypus is more than willing to give it to you if you abandon yourself to the childhood curiosity that exposed wonders to us so many years ago, and can do so again.
If you have Platypus as your guide:
People with this animal as a guide will often manifest traits similar to the animal itself. I work on the philosophy that we only have one guide, and it teaches us lessons as well as representing the core aspects of our personality. Therefore -
- People with platypus as their guide are very often people of solitude who never really fit into mainstream society. One of their major lessons in life is to realise and accept that this is normal, and natural, and not representative of any lacks within themselves or within the world. They must also learn that some socialising is necessary. These people tend to fall into industries where they spend a lot of time alone, and with sensitive electrical equipment. So far the three people with platypus guides I've met have all been programmers or analysts.
- Platypus people are often adept at examining their experiences and emotional problems in retrospect and learning new and nourishing lessons from them. This is a valuable lesson that they intrinsically share with others without really thinking about it. People with platypus medicine need to beware of emotional and mental disorders that can be connected to ruminating too much over the past, such as depression.
There will be other ways your guide manifests, and you will recognise them with awareness and communion.
As shadow guide/guide:
The shadow guide is the animal we often fear irrationally, that teaches us things about ourselves that are profound and difficult to confront. Often the traits we fear most within the shadow guide, are the traits that we dislike in ourselves. We must scrutinise why this is, and learn how to work with them.
- People who dislike or fear the platypus are often socialites who are very concerned about fitting in, and looking or appearing normal. They tend to revile the idea of being controversial, looking different, or being marginalised to a less popular section of society. These people are often constantly confronted with the harsh questions of what normalcy is, and what it means to be different or the same. These lessons can be incredibly difficult, and bring up problems relating to self-esteem and peer groups.
Contacting Platypus:
Like all animal helpers, this animal will only appear when right and appropriate, and cannot be forced to visit you, commune with you, or share messages with you. Platypus comes through a merging of water and earth elements, sitting in shallow lakes and streams, particularly those of fresh water. Or sitting out in the rain cross-legged on the earth are both good ways to get direct contact with platypus. Additionally you can consider using drumming instruments and stationery meditation and visualisation techniques. Platypus can be shy, and doesn't tend to 'talk' like animals such as Coyote and Raven. But platypus certainly gets their point across if you're meant to commune with them.
