Description:
Hummingbirds are found throughout the Americas, though are mostly found along the Gulf of Mexico; there are approximately 325 species. The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. They are known for being able to fly rapidly and adeptly in all directions (including backwards, and upside down) and have the most rapidly moving wings of all the birds. Most hummingbirds have vivid plumage, and flashes of iridescence. Hummingbirds cannot walk or hop, and can only move sideways along a perch.
Hummingbirds are promiscuous with no pair bonds formed, hummingbirds can also be aggressive and fight other birds, as well as amongst each other for territory and food. They have a high metabolism and need to eat on average every ten minutes, except at night when they go into a kind of nightly stasis or hibernation that drastically slows their metabolism and allows them to sleep without constant feeding. During migration they will sometimes double their body weight so they can use fat reserves while flying. Many hummingbirds are migratory, following the flowering patterns of shrubs and trees.
